If you haven’t met David, he is very hard to miss in our desk chair space. Standing well above 6 feet, David towers over most of our members and has just as big of a heart. David is one of our Founding Members here at desk chair and we are thrilled for the exciting things to come for him and his expanding team.
Q: Tell us a little about your career and journey
Well, I graduated from college in 2008, not planning at all to go into construction. I went to school for Business Marketing with the initiative to be an Insurance Agent. A friend introduced me to hail restoration/roofing and from there I saw value in the industry. I worked for a company until 2012. I decided it was time and took over the name Wood Street Builders and started to run my own business. I have ventured to dabble in inside restoration since.
Q: Give us your elevator pitch – describe your business in a few words and how you got the name.
My connection with the name is through my father, who worked for the company in the past and the literal street I was born on.
Honestly, in my opinion, I feel like construction and roofing has a bad stigma of being unprofessional and not providing services as promised. I was born and raised in the community and I care about the service that I am providing. I think being from the area you are serving has a great impact. I treat my clients professionally and make sure work is done promptly. “Communication, accountability and transparency” is what I live by with clients.
Q: Have you always wanted to be doing what you are doing now?
No – – but here I am! I did not have any interest in a traditional 9-5 job, and I am so grateful that insurance did not work out because I love owning my own business and having the flexibility to operate the way I choose.
Q: How did you decide to choose coworking and what is your favorite part about it?
I needed a place outside of my home to work, so I looked for office spaces locally. I found out about co-working and networking with other businesses and people, and I liked the pricing and amenities that came with it. It was impossible to try to network with my 3-year-old knocking on my door.
Q: How did you hear about desk chair workspace?
I was at the Armory and saw desk chair being built and inquired about it. It was a no brainer after seeing the space, I knew it would be a perfect fit.
Q: What is your favorite part about desk chair workspace?
The opportunity to meet and communicate with other professionals. It’s hard when you are a small business owner to have those opportunities outside of the customer base. It is just a natural fit, especially when you are used to working from home! The perks, of course, are great, like the free member beer.
Q: If you could have a drink with anyone, who would it be?
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
When I actually have time for fun, I like outdoor activities – – snowboarding, golf, basketball. Spending time with my family – – just doing what we do!
Q: Besides your own, what is your favorite local business?
My family loves Origins – -we love to eat there as a family.
What’s exciting for you right now?
I am really excited about my recent expansion of my team! Big things ahead for us!
